Kanuma 5/10 mm (hard quality)

3.2534.16 *

Kanuma 5/10 mm (hard quality) is an essential component for creating a well-aerated substrate suitable for carnivorous plants, providing an optimal balance between moisture and air at the root level. It offers a slight mineral contribution and is more acidic than akadama, making it effective for cultivating certain carnivorous plants by helping to maintain a lower pH. The negative charges on its surface can sequester harmful cations, benefiting plant health. Kanuma, a volcanic clay, is sourced from depths exceeding 3 meters in Cryptomeria forests in Japan, whereas akadama is collected from shallower depths. Kanuma is collected, dried, heated to eliminate organisms and pests, and then pulverized into various sizes. It can be mixed with pumice, volcanic lapillus, zeolite, and perlite to enrich the substrate with nutrients, or it can be used on its own as the sole component of the soil.

For carnivorous plant cultivation, various mixes can be tested, for example:
– Pure (100%) for cultivating Nepenthes sp.
– Mixed with Akadama 30% / Lapillo 30% / Perlite 20% / Kanuma 20% for cultivating Nepenthes.
– Coconut Fiber 33% / Pumice 33% / Kanuma 33% with dry or live sphagnum around the collar for cultivating Nepenthes sp.
– Pure or in a mix with other mineral components (zeolite, tuff, lapillus, pumice) for cultivating Pinguicula sp.
